Song:Flying Without Wings Westlife(西城男孩)

Lyric:
Everybody's looking for that somethingOne thing that makes it all completeYou'll find it in the strangest placesPlaces you never knew it could beSome find it in the faces of their childrenSome find it in their lovers eyesWho can deny the joy it bringsWhen you find that special thingYou're flying without wingsSome find it sharing in every morningSome in their solitary livesYou'll find it in the works of othersA simple line can make you laugh or cryYou'll find it in the deepest friendshipsThe kind you cherish all your livesAnd when you know how much that meansYou have found that special thingYou're flying without wingsSo impossible as they may seemYou've got to fight for every dream'Cuz who's to know which one you let goWould have made you completeBut for me it's waking up beside youTo watch the sun rise on your faceTo know that I can say I love youAt any given time or placeIt's the little things that only I knowThose are the things that make you mine, all mineAnd it's the flying without wings'Cuz you're my special thingI'm flying without wingsYou're the place my life beginsAnd you'll be where it endsI'm flying without wingsAnd that's the joy it bringsI'm flying without wings

Shooting lions in South Africa Friday, June 08, 2007

John Foster with one of the two lions he shot on his Sandhurst Safari.

The lions drool as they greedily lick the dead horse, savoring the fresh meat like a special treat. Then they gnaw at the horse's side until the belly rips open and the horses entrails spill out into the enclosure. I can’t take my eyes off the lions feeding as Joe my cameraman zooms in for a bloody close-up. I’m on location in Vryburg, South Africa, in game hunting country. Our seven-hour, bum-numbing drive from Johannesburg has been rewarded with stunning video of one of South Africa’s oldest canned hunting operations. This form of hunting is so controversial in South Africa it's difficult finding hunters who'll talk about it, let alone allow a CNN film crew to come along on a hunt. On a canned hunt, animals you’d normally expect to find in the wild like, lions, leopards and rhinos are either placed in an enclosed space or bred specially to be hunted as trophies.Animal rights groups say it's unethical and immoral and are campaigning for an outright ban of all trophy hunting in South Africa. The government hasn't gone quite that far, but they have given hunting industry a deadline of February 2008 for ending canned hunting as we know it today. But the hunting industry is furious at the threatened loss of millions of dollars in foreign revenue.Lion breeders make around $25,000 and sometimes more for each lion a hunter shoots. The hunter goes home happy, the breeders make money and the local villages are sustained by selling fresh horses and livestock as lion feed.

John Foster with the second lion he killed.
The lions at Sandhurst Safaris were beautiful -- all 250 of them. Sleek and golden they lived so close to the lodge that in the evening you could hear them roaring into the night. Each pride has its own enclosure and lives as a family unit. Separated by wire fencing the pens stretch across a huge area. If the wind blows the wrong way you get a unique waft of raw meat and pungent lion coming straight at you. When a client books in for a hunt, a lion will be released into the grounds a few days in advance. Then it's up to the hunter with the help of his trackers to find and shoot his trophy.John Foster, a hunter from Boise, Idaho, said I could join him on his hunt and include him in my story.Ten minutes after jumping on a truck our tracker found lion prints. It was a small lion the tracker said but John passed on it, he was after a big trophy. Joe the cameraman looked relieved, he’s scared of dogs so I’m glad that we didn’t have to go crawling through the long grass hunting a big cat. After two days on safari we packed up and drove back to Johannesburg. Sandhurst Safaris sent me a text the next day, John had bagged two lions. Of course I’m kicking myself for not staying that extra day and getting that footage on tape, but Joe was happy. Filming lions feasting on a dead horse was enough for him.

LEARNING TO LOVE ONESELF

Ask an American schoolchild what he or she is learning in school these days and you might even get a reply, provided you ask it in Spanish. But don't bother, here's the answer: Americans nowadays are not learning any of the things that we learned in our day, like reading and writing. Apparently these are considered fusty old subjects, invented by white males to oppress women and minorities.
What are they learning? In a Vermont college town I found the answer sitting in a toy store book rack, next to typical kids' books like 'Heather Has Two Mommies and Daddy Is Dysfunctional'. It's a teacher's guide called 'Happy To Be Me', subtitled 'Building Self Esteem'.
Self-esteem, as it turns out, is a big subject in American classrooms. Many American schools see building it as important as teaching reading and writing. They call it "whole language" teaching, borrowing terminology from the granola people to compete in the education marketplace.
No one ever spent a moment building my self-esteem when I was in school. In fact, from the day I first stepped inside a classroom my self-esteem was one big demolition site. All that mattered was "the subject," be it geography, history, or mathematics. I was praised when I remembered that "near", "fit", "friendly", "pleasing", "like" and their opposites took the dative case in Latin. I was reviled when I forgot what a cosine was good for. Generally I lived my school years beneath a torrent of castigation so consistent I eventually ceased to hear it, as people who live near the sea eventually stop hearing the waves.
Schools have changed. Reviling is out, for one thing. More important, subjects have changed. Whereas I learned English, modern kids learn something called "language skills." Whereas I learned writing, modern kids learn something called "communication". Communication, the book tells us, is seven per cent words, 23 per cent facial expression, 20 per cent tone of voice, and 50 per cent body language. So this column, with its carefully chosen words, would earn me at most a grade of seven per cent. That is, if the school even gave out something as oppressive and demanding as grades.
The result is that, in place of English classes, American children are getting a course in How to Win Friends and Influence People. Consider the new attitude toward journal writing: I remember one high school English class when we were required to keep a journal. The idea was to emulate those great writers who confided in diaries, searching their souls and honing their critical thinking on paper.
'Happy To Be Me' states that journals are a great way for students to get in touch with their feelings. Tell students they can write one sentence or a whole page. Reassure them that no one, not even you, will read what they write. After the unit, hopefully all students will be feeling good about themselves and will want to share some of their entries with the class."
There was a time when no self-respecting book for English teachers would use "great" or "hopefully" that way. Moreover, back then the purpose of English courses (an antique term for "Unit") was not to help students "feel good about themselves." Which is good, because all that reviling didn't make me feel particularly good about anything.

Vocabulary
// fusty - old fashioned in attitude
// Dysfunctional- any disturbance or abnormality in the functioning of an organ, part or relationship. The term is often used nowadays to describe marriages. E.g. A dysfunctional marriage is one which is pulling in two different directions, i.e. falling apart.
// Self Esteem- respect for or favourable opinion of oneself. E.g. His father taught him to hold himself in high self esteem and to ignore criticism.
// the granola people - A reference to a popular breakfast cereal in the United States. This cereal sells itself as 'whole food'. Here the author is making an ironical comparison between terminology used in selling this food and modern education.
// Reviling- using scornful or abusive language about someone or something
// honing- to sharpen or polish something. To improve something especially skills of some sort. E.g. He spent the holidays honing his speech making skills.
// castigation- to criticise someone in a severe manner

FINDING A JOB
Not so long ago almost any student who successfully completed a university degree or diploma course could find a good career quite easily. Companies toured the academic institutions, competing with each other to recruit graduates. However, those days are gone, even in Hong Kong, and nowadays graduates often face strong competition in the search for jobs.
Most careers organizations highlight three stages for graduates to follow in the process of securing a suitable career: recognizing abilities, matching these to available vacancies and presenting them well to prospective employers.
Job seekers have to make a careful assessment of their own abilities. One area of assessment should be of their academic qualifications, which would include special skills within their subject area. Graduates should also consider their own personal values and attitudes, or the relative importance to themselves of such matters as money, security, leadership and caring for others. An honest assessment of personal interests and abilities such as creative or scientific skills, or skills acquired from work experience, should also be given careful thought.
The second stage is to study the opportunities available for employment and to think about how the general employment situation is likely to develop in the future. To do this, graduates can study job vacancies and information in newspapers or they can visit a careers office, write to possible employers for information or contact friends or relatives who may already be involved in a particular profession. After studying all the various options, they should be in a position to make informed comparisons between various careers.
Good personal presentation is essential in the search for a good career. Job application forms and letters should, of course, be filled in carefully and correctly, without grammar or spelling errors. Where additional information is asked for, job seekers should describe their abilities and work experience in more depth, with examples if possible. They should try to balance their own abilities with the employer's needs, explain why they are interested in a career with the particular company and try to show that they already know something about the company and its activities.
When graduates are asked to attend for interview, they should prepare properly by finding out all they can about the prospective employer. Dressing suitably and arriving for the interview on time are also obviously important. Interviewees should try to give positive and helpful answers and should not be afraid to ask questions about anything they are unsure about. This is much better than pretending to understand a question and giving an unsuitable answer.
There will always be good career opportunities for people with ability, skills and determination; the secret to securing a good job is to be one of them.

Blog Reflaction

*Chatting Experience *
When our teacher told us we supposed to be used English to chat with our classmates for thirty minutes. Our first reactions were no way! Using a limit time to think aloud English and chat for thirty minutes. How could it be possible? It is because most of our classmates are good at Chinese. After a while, we had done our chatting. During the chat process we use our poor English to communicate with friends. We chat gossip, friendship etc. However in our mind we wish we could use Chinese, but we couldn’t. You can enter many different types’ chat rooms. If you couldn’t find a chat room you like, you can create another one. In the chat room you can share your feelings, talk about your family, the weather, sport, entertainments. Perhaps you can chat with the foreigner if you are a brave person. It could expend your views. Therefore, I think they are funny. However, some of our parents were worry about their children by chatting in the virtual world. The problem is not just a group of people talking gossip! They scared that some people will use these channel to become an illegal way. Then they will prohibit their children to use it. I think this is not a good way to do this. It is because these may depends on the children’s personality. Therefore, don’t waste your time to shout them. Parents may tell their children never to give out personal information such as telephone number, address, and your name. Never consent to meet anyone from the chat room. It’s very dangerous. Don’t waste your life to do the useful things. You need to do the thing that is good for you. No matter it was good or bad. Using English to chat with friends is a good way for us to practice our conversation and English typing skill. It’s also another way to make friends. Why not to try it?

T Blogging Experience
The name of my blog is虎斑☆恐龍王. It’s a mysterious fish which exists in several billion years ago. I’m so exciting, because it’s my first time to create a blog. In my blog its includes many things such as multimedia (music video, movie trailer, audio and video), music box, hot potato- JCloze, the hype links of online dictionary and EFL website, news, my essay record and some special code. Then the funny video is my favorite part. The characters are my favorite singer and their team made pranks on them. Next, I’d like to introduce the music video. They are “Green Day” the American punk rocky group. I choose this song because it has a special meaning for me. In 2005 I joined the CYC (China Youth Corps.) camp. The nickname fro this camp we called “Love Boat”. Our group chooses this son for their talent show and they got the first prize. They are the best team in my mind!
At first, I have no idea with this blog. I’m hearing about that before but really don’t know what it is. After, I took this course. I knew it! I know lots of computer terminology like components, coding system, recipient, JPEG, hyperlink, network, http and navigation bar…, etc. I suddenly realized that blog was really useful and a popular cyberspace for everybody. Computer is terrible important for everybody. Imaging that one day there is no computer in the world. What would happen??
Creating a blog people could upload anything that you want such as multimedia, pictures, news, games, diaries and special animations or effects …., act. However before you post those files, you have to learn what html code is. That’s really difficult for the beginner and the people who are bad at computer skills. They will think oh my god. What is html code and how do I add to my blog. How could I change my background and font? Many questions will come out from their brain. For those questions you may find out on the internet or you may ask your friends who are good at computer skills. There’s another way to make your blog look more colorful and interesting. You can browse your classmates and other people’s blog. Seeing what’s the different between you and their blog. What kinds of information do they post on their blog? What special animations did they put? If possible maybe you can switch opinions by building a blog and computer skills.
After, I did these 2 activities (creating a blog and chatting with friends). I think it was really amazing. I would never think that I could have my own blog. It’s really helping me to learn English and computer skills well. It is because when you got problems with creating blog you will need to send E-mail to the creator~ Of course- English. When you chat with other people and some words that you don’t know maybe you will use dictionary or online dictionary. For these processes, you will learn lots of new vocabularies. There is a proverb says that practice makes perfect.
What features attracted me? I think it would be “multimedia” because I can put funny videos and music sharing with my friends. Also, I can make a photo album to record my life. It’s a good way for friends know more about you.
All in all, this is a grateful course. It’s the best computer course that I have ever learned. Seriously!!~*<>*~ some of our teacher just let us learn the basic things. That’s so boring! I hope next semester we could learn more computer skills and new topics. By the way, Happy New Year~~Emma^0^

Limiting production breaks with tradition. Over the years, many American potato growers have done their best to grow large crops. The more potatoes they produced, the more they had to sell.
But too many potatoes for sale can mean too little profit. So the potato growers organization wants to reduce the amount of potatoes reaching the market. The goal is to keep demand strong and continuous.
Members promise to reduce their planting of potatoes. They also say they will not send potatoes to market when the supply becomes too large.
The idea began about two years ago when potato growers from the state of Idaho formed the United Potato Growers of Idaho. The group expanded its membership to become the national organization.
Idaho potato grower Albert Wada is board chairman of United Potato Growers of America. Mister Wada recently compared potato prices before and after formation of the organization. Between September, two thousand four and June, two thousand five, overproduction of potatoes brought prices down. But in the same period a year later, growers received an average price increase of four dollars for every forty-five kilograms of potatoes.
But not all potato farmers want to join the organization and restrict their crops. And planting time next spring will bring a test. The organization will learn if members really will limit their planting of potatoes.

The Weblog!!

What the weblog is and how it can be used in English teaching and learning?
(1)A blog is a website where entries are made in journal style and displayed in a reverse chronological order.
Blogs often provide commentary or news on a particular subject, such as food, politics, or local news; some function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. Most blogs are primarily textual although some focus on photographs (photoblog), videos (vlog), or audio (podcasting), and are part of a wider network of social media.
The term "blog" is a contraction of "Web log." "Blog" can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.

(1) Chronicles, commonplaces, diaries, and perzines can all be seen as predecessors of blogs. Before blogging became popular, digital communities took many forms, including Usenet, e-mail lists and bulletin board systems (BBS). In the 1990s, Internet forum software, such as WebEx, created running conversations with "threads". Threads are topical connections between messages on a metaphorical "corkboard".
